OK, so this story broke on Reuters last night and i thought that i’d post it here as this will have dramatic implecations for my collection. I’ve felt for a long time that Disney would have it’s eye on Lucasfilm as they have similar idiologies with regards to childrens entertainment. Yeah, i still think that Disney as a corporation right up there with the likes of Citi and my initial reaction was one of shock, disappointment and a little anger, but after a night’s sleep, i’ve completely changed my mind.
1, To quote from Reuters: “Lucas, 68, said it was time for him to retire from the day-to-day running of his business, although he will serve as “creative consultant” on the next movie.
“For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next. It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime.”
George Lucas is retiring. It’s a shame, but a lot of people are choosing to bad mouth him, but just look at what the man has acheived over his career. Star Wars, Indiana Jones, ILM, THX Sound, Lucas Arts Games. The list goes on. Lucas deserves to retire. Besides, looking at the quote, he has effectively given us Star Wars Back. That’s quite a gift. My main concern about this is that future generations won’t appreciate George as the creator of Star Wars and it’ll just be another Disney franchise.
2, Lucas is huge on education charities. With this kind of money in his back pocket, can you imagine what he’ll be able to do for charity?
3, there’s been a lot of Lucas bashing on some of the other forums that i read and i feel obligated to speak out. Starting from Episode 1, Star Wars has been on TV in the UK over the last few weeks. My best friend came round over the weekend and told me how his youngest (Dylan) has been absolutely transfixed by the PT. (He’s now known as “Tobi Wan Kenobi”). I love this as it shows that whether i like it or not, (and i do find the PT watchable and entertaining) the Prequel Trilogy has garnered a whole new generation of fans. That is awesome. 🙂 Dylan, err i mean “Tobi” is watching Episode IV this weekend. I can’t wait to see what he makes of it.
4, We’re getting three new movies out of this (the first in 2015). What else can we expect? Will Disney give the mooted live action TV series the green light? What about a DVD/Blue Ray release of the original cut of the Holy Trilogy? That would be awesome.
5, what does this mean for my collection? $4.05 Bn is a huge chunk of change and Didney will want to start making that money back as soon as possible. Sure, some of the merchandise will be twee and sugarcoated, but what about the grail items? Will we get a 5 foot studio scale? What new licences will be granted as a result of this? I don’t know but i think that there’s going to be a lot of great (and nonsense) stuff for me to add to my collection.
Finally, George, there have been some rough times, but in Star wars you have given me a gift that’s been my passion for 35 years. Thank you. *Sheds a small tear. 🙂
Well, they’re my thoughts, i’d love to hear what you think.
It was a shock for me as well, but I really don’t see any downside — provided they manage the property well. Lucas wasn’t going to be doing more feature films and seemed a little burned out in general, so handing over the reins to someone new and enthusiastic seems like a great idea. I’m very excited about the possibilities for new movies, and this should also have the side effect of keeping the Star Wars toys and collectibles flowing for many years to come. I think it’ll be a positive all around.
It is great news although i don’t like the way that people on the forums seem to be so critical.
I’m excited and I have no idea why people would be upset and the prospect of another movie or 7… As they have announced that they will release a new movie starting in 2015 every 2-3 years for the foreseeable future people will finally be getting what they want, MORE Star Wars. These movies may not hold a candle to the OT but I am sure they will still be enjoyable to watch (at least once) and to line up for. =D One of the things that I am looking forward to, that I think have people up in arms about, is a SW show aimed at the younger kids. I would love for there to be a toddler age appropriate show for my future babies to enjoy. I see nothing wrong with starting them early! My two-year-old nephew can recognize and name Darth Vader, but there really isn’t a way to get him into the genera the way he’s enamored with the Marvel Universe. I think it’s high time for that to change!
I am also REALLY excited about the prospect of LucasFilm theme park. Who wouldn’t want to see that?! And all the lovely merch to be bought at said theme park!
That’s the spirit.
TEAM STAR WARS!!! HOO YAH!!!
