Mike just notified me of this coin set featuring a Millennium Falcon case.
“New Zealand Mint will be producing two set of packaging. Each set come in four coins. The Star Wars Millenium Falcon set representing the rebel alliance. You will get four coins featuring a full coloured image of your favourite character duos of Luke Skywalker / Princess Leia, Obi-Wan Kenobi / Yoda, R2-D2 / C-3PO, Han Solo / Chewbacca and a Millenium Falcon Ship box. Open the Millennium Falcon case and hear authentic movie sound effects of the ship’s iconic “jump to light speed”.
From what i can see, can either buy the Millennium Falcon case with four coins featuring our heroes or a Darth Vader case with a further four coins featuring dark side characters. These are solid silver.
Naturally, i’m only interested in the Millennium Falcon set and i have to say that the coins themselves are quite impressive.
It’s nice to see that the Millennium Falcon also features in the background of the Han and Chewie coin and is VERY nicely done IMO. That said, i might be wrong, but is the Chewbacca in this from Revenge of the Sith rather than A New Hope? Quite an error.
They plan to release a total of 40 coins of individual characters. These will be cast in base metal with a silver plating. Phew, that’s a lot, but they do look nice and depending on the price for indivudual coins should appeal to a wide variety of collectors.
At $391.66 (plus shipping) for the Millennium Falcon set is a little pricey but I do think that this is a rather nice set. I can’t help thinking that the sound effects on the Falcon case make it a little bit tacky. It’s due for release in November 2011.
You can order them from the New Zealand Mint here.
Interesting, but quite expensive as you say. I have a feeling this is another one of those products that will not hold its value over time. It’s a good thing that the 40 character coins they’re going to be releasing are silver plated, rather than solid silver like these, since it’s a fair bet that Jabba is among them. 🙂
🙂 That’s what i was thinking. I had a look at the coins and they do look nice. I couln’t find anything on individual price though.
As to value, i’ve got to agree. I can’t see coin collectors or Star Wars fans making this a huge success. I’ll check in in a few months time to see if there’s a sale or something.
It’s also interesting that they are actually being put out by the tiny island nation of Niue, rather than New Zealand as the name might imply.

I’m hoping that they’ll release a list of proposed coins as i might pick up a Lando or Nien Numb coins for the focus collection at some point. I’d also be interested to see how many coins will feature Jabba and his cronies.
Ok, I took a gamble with this hoping that it’s too expensive to sell out and will become a rare collectible later on. My first impression was that it was small, but nicely packed. I must admit that considering it cost me nearly £300 the Millennium Falcon itself could’ve had a bit more colour as it’s so monochromatic. Overall, I didn’t think it was worth the money paid, but I am glad I got it.
